East Turkestan collection

In the National Archives in Stockholm there is a
collection called "Ostturkestansamlingen" - the East Turkestan
collection - gathered by the late Samuel Franne. It contains almost 8
800 photographs, texts, diaries of Swedes who worked in East Turkestan
from the period of 1892 till 1938.
To make it easier to find the picture you want they are in159 different
boxes. For every box there is a description of the content and how many
pictures there are in that box. There is a list in Swedish and I will
give you some examples. Let=92s start with the boxes with photos of
Uyghur culture in the beginning of the 20th Century. According to
Ambassador Gunnar Jarring the boxes 142a =96 145 are the most valuable

Mission=92s caravan roads with maps. Both Swedish and foreign
literature concerning the Silk road. Box 5-46 Journeys to and from East
Turkestan 1894- 1938. Different caravan roads are used through Russia,
Leh or Gilgit 2137pictures. Box 12 In this box there is also a Swedish
book written by Palmberg "Over Pamir och Himalaya", describing the
difficult and dangerous journeys over the Pamir mountain and the
Himalayas. Box 50-93 One box for every Swedish family that went to East
Turkestan to work there. Mostly pictures but also some letters, diaries
and books. Box 82 Carl Persson one of the missionaries was interested in
the plants in ET and in this box should be an ET flora. Box 83b Gustaf
Raquette was very interested in the Uyghur language. Dictionary, English
and Turkish + Eastern Turki Grammar I and II, 1912 + part III Vocabulary
+ Grammatica Kashgar 1935. Box 94-98 Some Uyghurs from that time have
their own boxes. Box 94 The Uyghur Jacob Stephen and his book "
Flykting f=F6r Kristi skull", where he tells about his childhood in ET
and why he became "a refugee for Christ". Box 97 Kader Affendi Box 101
Ambassador Gunnar Jarring visited ET 1929-30 and 1978. Box 120-125
Kashgar 634 pictures. Box 124 Medical treatment.
Box 125 The printing press in Kashgar. Some books for example: "Prints
in Kashgar" by Gunnar Jarring, a description of everything that was
printed on the printing press in Kashgar. A schoolbook in Natural
Sciences printed 1935 including "The Ornithology of Eastern
Turkestan".=20
